From unattested *sъlnь + *-ьce, from Proto-Indo-European *sóh₂wl̥.
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian saulė, Latvian saule, Old Prussian saule.
Indo-European cognates include Latin sōl, Welsh haul, Ancient Greek ἥλιος (hḗlios), Sanskrit सूर्य (sūrya)/स्वर् (svar).
