From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sáźʰatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sáȷ́ʰatay, from Proto-Indo-European *seǵʰ- (“to hold, overpower”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἔχω (ékhō).
