Inherited from Sanskrit धूम (dhūma), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (“smoke”). Cognate with Ancient Greek θυμός (thumós), Latin fūmus, Old Church Slavonic дꙑмъ (dymŭ). Compare Urdu دھواں (dhvā̃) / Hindi धुआँ (dhuā̃).
