Structural formula of the acetylene (ethyne) molecule, C2H2. The molecule belongs to the D∞h point group.

Etymology

acetyl +‎ -en, first part from both Latin acētum (vinegar), from aceō (I am sour), from Proto-Italic *akēō (be sharp-tasting, be sour), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ-éh₁-ye-ti, from *h₂eḱ- (sharp) + and from Ancient Greek ὕλη (húlē, wood, forest; material, matter), from Proto-Indo-European *swel-, *sel- (firewood, wood, beam). Last part from Ancient Greek -ηνή (-ēnḗ), feminine form of -ηνός (-ēnós, added to place name to form an adjective), from -νός (-nós), alternative form of -νος (-nos), from Proto-Indo-European *-nós (creates verbal adjectives from roots).
