Uncertain; possibly from Gaulish *barros (the bushy end), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰer- (to bear, carry).

Alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *barō (bar, barrier), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (to strike, pierce), related to Latin forus (plank).
