Etymology[edit]

According to ESSJa, deverbal of *krojiti ‎(to cut), with lengthening of the root vowel (Early Proto-Slavic *krāji and *krajitej, respectively). Derksen argues for Proto-Indo-European *kroh₁(y)-, full-grade of the root *kreh₁(y)- ‎(to sieve, separate).
