This category lists English words which can be pronounced with a voiceless velar fricative (/x/) in standard dialects. This sound fell out of use in most English dialects, but survived in Scottish English and has subsequently been reborrowed into other dialects. In addition, some words borrowed from other languages such as German and Hebrew also include this sound. Speakers who struggle to produce /x/ usually substitute /k/, or in cases where the sound occurs at the beginning of a word, /h/.
