From Ukrainian Доне́цьк (Donécʹk), from Доне́ць (Donécʹ, “the Donets”), diminutive of Дон (Don, “the Don”), from Proto-Scythian *Dānu (“river”). Compare Russian Доне́цк (Donéck), Доне́ц (Donéc), Дон (Don).
