From Middle High German mōnōt, mānōt, from Old High German mānōd, from Proto-West Germanic *mānōþ. See also Mond. Compare Old Saxon mānoth, Dutch maand, English month, Danish måned.

1. month (division of a year, usually one twelfth ≈ 30 days)

   bis zum Ende des Monats ― until the end of the month

2. month (any period of such length)

   schon seit einem Monat ― for a month already

3. month (period between two new moons)

• In Austria also used as a neuter noun.
