Etymology

[edit]

From Latin nervus, partly via French nerf.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /nɛrf/, [nɛʁf], [nɛɐ̯f]
  • Audio:(file)
  • The standard pronunciation is for this stem to be realised with /f/ when the preceding syllable has primary stress (as e.g. in Nerven, entnerven, nervig), but with /v/ when the stress moves forward (as e.g. in nervös, enervieren). However, a minority of speakers may use /v/ in all prevocalic positions. Compare the same in Larve.

Noun

[edit]

Nerv m (mixed or weak, genitive Nervs or Nerves or (rarely in technical usage) Nerven, plural Nerven)

  1. nerve
