From Proto-Indo-European *h₂epó (“away, off”). Cognate to Messapic [script needed] (apa, “from, out of, by”),[1] Ancient Greek ἀπό (apó, “away, off”), Sanskrit अप (apá).

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁op-eio/e-, from *h₁ep- (“to take”). Cognate to Hittite 𒂊𒅁 (epp-, “to take, seize, grab”), Latin apīscor (“I grasp”), Ancient Greek ἅπτω (háptō, “fasten, bind”), Old Armenian ունիմ (unim, “possess”), Sanskrit आप्त (āpta, “to reach, gain, take possession of”), आप्नोति (āpnoti, “to obtain, to grasp”).[2] The verb is suppletive with past dhashë and participle dhënë from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃-.[3]
