[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *pod-néh₂-ti, from *pod- (“to fetch”), and cognate with Old Church Slavonic попасти (popasti, “to fetch”).[1] Whether the root is further connected to *ped- (“to walk, stumble, fall”) is unclear and semantically dubious.
