From Middle High German schīn, Old High German scin (lustre, shining, brightness, clearness). Cognate with Old Norse skina, Old Saxon scīnan, Old English shēn (ghost), Dutch schijn, English shine, Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌽 (skeinan).[1]
