From Middle High German snabel, from Old High German snabul, from Proto-Germanic *snabulaz (snout, muzzle), from Proto-Indo-European *ksnew- (to scratch, rub). Cognate with Dutch snavel, Saterland Frisian Snoabel (beak, bill), Old English snofl (mucus, snivel).
