Etymology 1[edit]

From Middle High German schuldigære (debtor, accused” as well as “creditor, accuser). Equivalent to the obsolete verb schuldigen +‎ -er. Compare Schuldner (debtor, one who owes money). In the Lord's Prayer a calque of Latin debitor.
