Problems in the dictionaries: Preliminary result on search for 硚头 & notes on 硚口

[edit]

I have been looking for a location called "硚头" to confirm statements in A Dictionary of Current Chinese (现代汉语词典试用本 page 825, 现代汉语词典5 page 1099, 现代汉语词典6 page 1046, 现代汉语词典7 page 1052), A Standard Dictionary of Current Chinese (现代汉语规范词典3 page 1057) and 重編國語辭典修訂本 [1] ("四川省境的礄頭及湖南省境的礄口市") that there is such a place as "礄頭" / "硚头" / "Qiáotóu" (this pinyin printed verbatim in 现代汉语词典试用本p825) in Sichuan province. In a search of Baidu, I found the following village names, all of which seem to be referred to as "桥头" instead of "硚头" in current official literature:

Based on this cursory search, my current best guess is that the '硚头' referred to in the various permutations of 现代汉语词典 may be the village in 重庆市巫山县福田镇, and that the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th editions of 现代汉语词典 & the other dictionaries did not update to reflect the change in the status of Chongqing. I have not determined whether the change to "桥头" is an official or colloquial change.

My impression of Wuhan 硚口 is that the connection between 桥 and 硚 is often drawn very explicitly, and that 硚 is interpreted as referring to a specific bridge or set of bridges constructed of stone over the Han River between Hanyang and Hankou that don't exist anymore. (The idea seems to be that this sort of like a 会意兼形声字 where 从石,从桥省亦声.) I can only surmise that the statement about a Qiaokou city in Hunan province ("湖南省境的礄口市") in 重編國語辭典修訂本 [2] is a multifaceted gross error which should be "湖北省境的礄口區" (could refer to some smaller locations in Hunan called 礄口) --Geographyinitiative (talk) 05:07, 12 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

The 國家教育研究院 decided that the 重編國語辭典修訂本 was in error concerning the so-called "湖南省境的礄口市". They changed the dictionary to read "湖北省境的礄口區" just like I recommended. Check out the letter they sent me- pretty neat! -- [[3]] --Geographyinitiative (talk) 04:00, 19 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Geographyinitiative: Nice! In my experience, they are indeed quite responsive :D — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 12:43, 19 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
It was a cool experience. Also, as expected, the fourth edition of A Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese (现代汉语词典2002年增补本) page 1020 does mention "礄頭" / "硚头" in Sichuan province. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 23:46, 5 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Rfv-sense: 礄頭(?). Tagged by @Geographyinitiative but not listed. RcAlex36 (talk) 17:00, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

There are two examples given for the character 礄 in Xiandai Hanyu Cidian- 礄口 and 礄頭. Those are the "classic" examples for this character. I never found where 礄頭 was located, hence I put this request to verify. It would make sense to just delete this. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 17:12, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Resolved by removing the example. It wasn't really an rfv-sense issue. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 09:28, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
