As far as I understand it, it's because each word has its own meaning, but can also be used, due to confusion, to mean the other thing. Maybe tagging the senses that are due to confusion with "nonstandard" will help. The distinction is probably clearest in the entries for the root words, egotism vs egoism. I am slightly tempted to put all the content on one page and note the confusion in etymology section(s), but that seems 'wrong' if they originated as distinct words. - -sche (discuss) 14:54, 4 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
