@Vorziblix: I've noticed the word povrtlarstvo in one of the quotations of our friend zvjezdoznanstvo. Is it directly derived from this, or is there an intermediary term? --Barytonesis (talk) 10:45, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

@Barytonesis: I’d say it’s not derived from this at all, but from povrtlar (“vegetable farmer or merchant”), which is in turn derived from povrće (“vegetables”). — Vorziblix (talk · contribs) 19:31, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

@Barytonesis: Yes, you’re correct! -ni is the definite form of -an; the two are cognate to Russian -ный (-nyj) and -ен (-en), respectively, and ultimately all from Proto-Slavic *-ьnъ (and its definite form *-ьnъjь, which is formed by sticking the pronoun *jь on the end). However, Russian adjectives get lemmatized at the long/definite form whenever it exists, whereas Serbo-Croatian adjectives get lemmatized at the short/indefinite form whenever it exists, hence why the suffixes are also lemmatized differently in the two languages. — Vorziblix (talk · contribs) 11:30, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
