German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Short for Untergrundbahn ("underground railway"), but note that the first German underground, in Berlin, was initially called an Unterpflaster-Bahn ("underpavement railway"). Not to be confused with U-Straßenbahn (short for Undergrundstraßenbahn; in English known as premetro).
