Welcome
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
- Just to reiterate (heh, five years later) if you create a minimal user page with language userboxes, it will automatically categorise your proficiency so that other people can find you. We don't have that many Celticists around. Equinox ◑ 04:15, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
Block?
[edit]@Chuck Entz Could you please explain why I was blocked? I've only made one edit in the last month, on jsem, which wasn't disruptive and hasn't been reverted. Could this be a mistake? Thanks — This unsigned comment was added by Catrìona (talk • contribs).
- Firstly, you've never been blocked. You could have been caught in some sort of a range block, but if that's the case, you need to give a bit more detail.
- Secondly, pings will only go through if you sign your posts (which you should do anyway, as a matter of common courtesy). —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 01:15, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Metaknowledge. The message was "Editing from 2607:FB90:0:0:0:0:0:0/32 has been disabled by Chuck Entz for the following reason(s): Disruptive edits
This block has been set to expire: 10:05, 20 June 2018." so I guess my IP address was in a bad range. If the block ends tomorrow, then I will just wait. Catrìona (talk) 01:44, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
- Ah, then that is indeed what happened. A vandal in your virtual neighbourhood has apparently caught you up in the mess. @Chuck Entz, here's a range to be careful with. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 04:15, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Header indent level
[edit]== is for language headers. For References you need three ===. Equinox ◑ 16:24, 8 April 2020 (UTC)
Formatting
[edit]Hey there. Looks like you've been around for a while, but you still leave half-broken entries behind. If you want some German entries created consider using Wiktionary:Requested entries (German) as an option. – Jberkel 15:43, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
