Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! --Lo Ximiendo (talk) 21:07, 23 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Please note that entries have to declare one or more parts of speech. If a header is incorrect or insufficient, change it or add new headers, but don't leave the entry without any part of speech. Cheers, - -sche (discuss) 01:46, 31 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Welsh capitalization

[edit]

You have moved the Welsh days of the week to the incorrect capitalization. Monday, for example, is written dydd Llun dyddiau Llun. The word dydd just means "day" and is not capitalized. If you need evidence, see http://techiaith.bangor.ac.uk/GeiriadurAcademi/?lang=en —Stephen (Talk) 13:20, 1 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sorry Stephen, I've always been taught to capitalise dydd. I'll undo my edits immediately. Thanks for pointing it out. EdwardH (talk) 15:23, 1 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Template:cy-conj-colloquial

[edit]

Hi, I can't figure out what the second parameter of {{cy-conj-colloquial}} (things like pret-1s and fut-3s-b) is supposed to do. I've added samples of its usage to the documentation page, and I don't see any difference in the table. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 11:06, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

If you provide a value for pret-1-s, say, then the -b parameter lets you provide an optional, alternative value. for example, {{cy-conj-colloquial|bwyt|pret-1s=blah|pret-1s-b=blahblah}} yields:
Oh okay. The way the documentation is written, it looks like the second positional parameter is supposed to be "pret-1s" or "fut-3s-b" or whatever, but in fact, there can be a named parameter whose name is "pret-1s" or "fut-3s-b" or whatever. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 12:32, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it's not very intuitive. I don't think those parameters have even been used, so you could change it to something more useful if you'd like. EdwardH (talk) 13:40, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
