  1. (aviation) While flying under visual flight rules, finding one's own route without formal reliance on navigation aids, defined fixes, or the like.
  2. (US military, slang) Bypassing normal channels, particularly skipping intervening levels in the chain of command.
    He went VFR direct to the general, and without having gotten his facts straight.
