Etymology 1[edit]
16th century, from Middle Low German Wissel, from Proto-Slavic *Visъla. The form is probably due to analogy: as wissel(-bēre) is also the Low German form of the fruit in etymology 2 below, the river name was adapted to High German accordingly.
