Etymology[edit]

18th century, spread from Berlin. Borrowed from Yiddish סוס (sus), from Hebrew סוס (sūs). Initial [s] is a (now dated) allophone of /t͡s/ in Berlin and other parts of northern Germany; hence the z-spelling.
