From New Latin abelmoschus, from Arabic أَبُو المِسْك ‎(ʾabū l-misk, father of musk), or حَبّ المِسْك ‎(ḥabb al-misk, grain of musk), from حَبّ ‎(ḥabb, grain) + مِسْك ‎(misk), from Persian مشک ‎(mošk).
