From Old French, from Vulgar Latin *admortīre, from Latin mors. Compare Italian ammortire, Romanian amorţi. See a-, mort and -ir.

amortir

  1. to cushion, absorb, soften (shock, blow etc.)
  2. to deaden, muffle (noise)
  3. (finance) to pay off, amortize; to redeem (a title)

Conjugation

This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
