Etymology
Originally the plural form of a no longer used singular term baile, from the same stem as baidīt “to scare” (q.v.): (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 95: Parameter 1 should be a valid language code; the value "bat-pro" is not valid. See WT:LOL. *bai with an extra -l, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *bʰoi-, the o grade of *bʰei- “to hit.” Cognates include Lithuanian bailùs (“afraid”), Sanskrit भीरु (bhīrú-, “afraid”).[1]
