From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese baldon (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Old French bandon (“jurisdiction”), a bandon (“at will, freely”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bannaną. Cognate with Spanish baldón.
