From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Albanian *brina, from pre-Albanian *bʰr̥nos, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *bʰrendos ‘stag, red deer’. Cognate to Messapic bréndon (deer), Thracian toponym Brendike, Swedish brinde (elk), Lithuanian bríedis (elk).[1][2] Alternatively from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *h₃bʰrúHs (eyebrow), although the semantic development would be unique for this root.
