English

Etymology

From Latin centum (hundred), via French.

Prefix

SI prefix
c Previous: milli-
Next: deci-

centi-

  1. hundred; one-hundredth
  2. In the International System of Units and other metric systems of units, multiplying the unit to which it is attached by 10-2. Symbol: c

Usage notes

This prefix is used somewhat less frequently since the centimetre–gram–second (CGS) system of units was superseded as a technical standard by the metre–kilogram–second (MKS) system of units and then the International System of Units (SI). For example, "1 cm" (one centimetre) may often be written instead as either "10 mm" or "0.01 m", depending on scientific discipline. However, the use of centimetres is still quite common both in the literature of the health sciences and in general education.
