Etymology

From compaña, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Vulgar Latin compania, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Late Latin compāniō (whence also Spanish compañón, French compagnon, Italian compagnone), from cum + pānis. Compare Portuguese companheiro.
