conjugate base (plural conjugate bases)

  1. (chemistry) Any compound, of general formula Xn+, which can be transformed into a conjugate acid HX(n+1)+ by the gain of a proton.
Examples
  • Cl- → HCl
  • HSO4- → H2SO4
  • NH3 → NH4+
