From Old Spanish costumne, from Vulgar Latin *costūmen or *costūmine (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Catalan costum, French coutume, Italian costume, Portuguese costume), contracted form of *cosuetūmen, from Latin cōnsuētūdinem, singular accusative of cōnsuētūdō, from cōnsuēscō (“I accustom, habituate”), from con- (“with”) + suēscō (“I become accustomed”). Doublet of consuetud, a borrowing.
