From Old Spanish costumne, from Vulgar Latin *costūmen or *costūmine (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Catalan costum, French coutume, Italian costume, Portuguese costume), contracted form of *cosuetūmen, from Latin cōnsuētūdinem, singular accusative of cōnsuētūdō, from cōnsuēscō (I accustom, habituate), from con- (with) + suēscō (I become accustomed). Doublet of consuetud, a borrowing.
