dân chủ
Vietnamese
Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 民主, composed of 民 (“people”) and 主 (“lord; master”), from Japanese 民主 (minshu), used as a calque of English republic for a new superficial meaning "the master which is the people" (an interpretation especially emphasized in communist teachings), ultimately from Middle Chinese 民主 (miɪn t͡ɕɨoX, “monarch”, literally “lord of the people”).
