(deprecated template usage)

From Old Swedish dø̄ma, from Old Norse dœma, from Proto-Germanic *dōmijaną.

Pronunciation

  • (file)

Verb

döma (present dömer, preterite dömde, supine dömt, imperative döm)

  1. to sentence, to judge
  2. to deem, to make a judgement
  3. (sports) to umpire, to referee

Usage notes

  • Many Swedish verbs end in -mma. This verb is also pronounced with a long m (and a short ö) despite being spelled with only one m. Swedish schoolchildren are taught the "rule" (spelling habit) that there is never a double m in (the spelling of) any word related to dom and döma (though they are all pronounced with a long m).
