Borrowed from French demi-teinte, or demi- +‎ tint.

demitint (plural demitints)

  1. (art) That part of a painting, engraving, etc. which is neither in full darkness nor full light.
  2. (art) The shade itself; neither the darkest nor the lightest in a composition.
