Etymology[edit]
From Ottoman Turkish دنك (denk), ultimately from Chinese 等 (MC tʌiX, təŋX, “equal; sort, type, etc.”), or specifically 戥 (“small steelyard for weighing money and similar items”). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (teŋ, “equal, equivalent, appropriate”), Kazakh тең (teñ, “equal”), Uzbek teng (“equal”), Bashkir тиң (tiŋ, “equal”), Yakut тэҥ (teñ, “equal”).
