Finnish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Inessive singular of esi-. Cognate with Estonian ees.
Pronunciation[edit]
Postposition[edit]
edessä (+ genitive and/or possessive suffix)
- (static) in front of
- Antonym: takana
- Hän seisoo talon edessä.
- S/he stands in front of the house.
- Hän seisoo (meidän) edessämme.
- S/he stands in front of us.
- Hän seisoo talomme edessä.

Usage notes[edit]
- If the complement is a personal pronoun, edessä takes a possessive suffix, and the pronoun can then be omitted if it is a first-person or second-person pronoun (as is standard with possessive suffixes).

- in the way
- Synonym: tiellä
- En minä voi, kun olet edessä!
- I can't when you're in the way!
Usage notes[edit]
Can be used postpositionally (+ genitive) and/or with a possessive suffix (when the complement is a personal pronoun).
