Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اریمك (erimek), from Proto-Turkic *ẹri- (to melt).[1] Cognate with Azerbaijani ərimək, Kazakh еру (eru), Kyrgyz эрүү (erüü), Yakut ир (ir, to melt), Turkmen eremek, Tuvan эриир (eriir), Uzbek erimoq.

Verb

erimek (third-person singular simple present erir)

  1. (intransitive) to melt, dissolve, become liquid
    Donmuş yağ eridi.The frozen fat became liquid.
    Tuz suda erir mi?Will salt dissolve in water?
  2. (intransitive) to wear thin, grow threadbare
  3. (intransitive) to waste away, get thin and weak, become emaciated
