Etymology

Traditionally explained as borrowed from Proto-Permic *äzwäś, compare Komi-Permyak эзысь (ezyś) and Udmurt азвесь (azveś).

According to Holopainen (2019) and Metsäranta (2020), however, Hungarian ezüst and the related Permic forms are probably ultimately borrowed from Ossetian ӕвзист (ævzist) (“silver”), deriving from Alanic.^[1]^[2]
