Etymology

Borrowed from Thai ฝรั่ง (fà-ràng, Westerner). Doublet of Frank, frank, franc, and firangi.

Etymology

First attested in 1758 by Søren Fermann in Tinn dialect. Later also attested by Søren Richart Hagerup (probably Surnadal dialect, ca. 1770) and Jacob Nicolai Wilse (Spydeberg dialect, 1780), but Wilse gives definition "a sudden sickness".
