From Proto-Germanic *fōgijaną (to join), from Proto-Indo-European *paḱ- (to fasten, place). Cognate with Old Frisian fōgia, Old Saxon fōgian (to add), Dutch voegen, Old High German fuogen (to add) (German fügen). Related to fang, fair.
