From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese feira, from Late Latin feria (festival, holiday), from Latin feriae, from Proto-Indo-European *dhēs- (god, godhead, deity).

Cognate with Portuguese feira, Spanish feria, French foire, Italian fiera and English fair.
