    From Old Irish flesc,[2] from Proto-Celtic *wliskā, possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wel-. Possibly related to Gothic 𐍅𐌻𐌹𐌶𐌾𐌰𐌽 (wlizjan, to mortify, bruise).[3]
