From Proto-Germanic *gamainiz, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱommoynis (“common”). Equivalent to ġe- + mǣne. Cognate with Old Frisian mēne, Old Saxon gimēni, Old Dutch gemeini, Old High German gimeini, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌼𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (gamains), also with Latin commūnis.
