Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *gamainiz, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱommoynis (common). Equivalent to ġe- +‎ mǣne. Cognate with Old Frisian mēne, Old Saxon gimēni, Old Dutch gemeini, Old High German gimeini, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌼𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (gamains), also with Latin commūnis.
