Borrowed from Italiote Ancient Greek Γραικίζω (Graikízō), equivalent to Graecus +‎ -issō. Attested since Plautus.

Pronunciation

[edit]

Verb

[edit]

graecissō (present infinitive graecissāre, perfect active graecissāvī, supine graecissātum); first conjugation

  1. to act in a Greek manner; to adopt Greek customs or speech
    • c. 200 BCE, Plautus, Menaechmi 11:
atque adeō hoc argūmentum graecissat, tamen nōn atticissat, vērum sicilicissitat.
And by the way, this argument sounds kind of Greek, though not Attic Greek, but rather Sicilian.
