Inherited from Old Spanish fablar, from Latin fābulāre (chat, converse), collateral form of fābulārī, ultimately from fārī (speak, say), from Proto-Italic *fāōr, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (to speak). Doublet of the borrowing fabular.
