Etymology

From Middle English *homles, *hamles, from Old English hāmlēas (homeless), equivalent to home +‎ -less. Cognate with Danish hjemløs (homeless), Swedish hemlös (homeless), Dutch heemloos. Compare also German heimatlos (homeless), Icelandic heimilislaus (homeless).
