Alteration of obsolete hoopoop, from earlier hoop, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle French huppe, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin upupa, ultimately onomatopoeic; Compare Ancient Greek ἔποψ (épops), Persian پوپو (popo).
