[edit]i- (“nominalizing prefix”) + mọ (“to mold, to shape”) + ilẹ̀ (“land”), literally “The creators of the land”, compare with Itsekiri umalẹ̀, if the term existed in Proto-Yoruboid, perhaps it was Proto-Yoruboid *ʊ́-mɔlɛ̀
